One of the most spectacular things about Monster Truck, is that he has the ability to alert me to migraine headaches before they happen. Because of this amazing skill, I take him with me almost everywhere I go. We all know how well adapted a dog's sense of smell is, but dogs can really smell in a way we can't normally perceive. The reason Monster Truck knows I'm going to have a migraine, is because he smells the chemical changes in my body. It sounds far fetched, but dogs can separate smells from one another to know the different compositions. For instance, when you smell an "apple pie," a dog smells the apples, vanilla, sugar, cinnamon, flour, butter and every part of it individually. This ability is only recently being researched for medical applications. Some dogs have been trained to alert their owners to oncoming seizures and low insulin levels, while others have been trained to smell cancer well before it's detected by doctors. The thing we can't get dogs to do yet, is tell us exactly what it is they're smelling. If we knew what a dog was smelling, then we could use that knowledge to diagnose many other diseases early.
